In March of 2023, after an 8 year study, the SCCS ruled Nano-Hydroxyapatite to be safe and effective when used in toothpaste up to a 10% concentration and in mouthwash up to a 0.465% concentration. This safety evaluation only applies to the hydroxyapatite (nano) with the following characteristics:
Nano-Hydroxyapatite composed of rod-shaped particles of which at least 95.8% (in particle number) have an aspect ratio of less than 3, and the remaining 4.2% have an aspect ratio not exceeding 4.9 the particles are not coated or surface modified. Nano-Hydroxyapatite in the form of nanoXIM-CarePaste by the manufacturer, Fluidinova, was the ingredient used and studied by the EU’s SCCS.
SCCS is the Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety which is an independent committee of experts within the European Commission that provides scientific advice on the health and safety risks of non-food consumer products. They evaluate the safety of ingredients and potential hazards in everyday consumer goods.
