Oil of Oregano: One of nature’s most therapeutic essential oils

Oregano is a herb that belongs to the mint family and its aromatic leaves are used in many Mediterranean recipes. Its name comes from Greek, meaning "Joy of the Mountain". There are over 40 varieties of oregano, Origanum vulgare is a species that is particularly high in phytochemical substances that help to fight infections. Oregano's healing properties come from four main compounds: alcohols, esters, phenols, and terpenes.

The natural properties of these substances are what make Oil of Oregano so powerful. Phenols, such as carvacrol, act as antiseptics and antioxidants, while terpenes have antiseptic, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory properties. Alcohols found in oregano oil have antiviral and antiseptic qualities. Esters are potent antifungal agents. Oregano oil is also one of the few herbs that contain therapeutic amounts of rosmarinic acid, one of nature’s most powerful antioxidants.
