What is turmeric?
Turmeric, from the ginger family, is primarily grown in Indonesia, China, India, and other tropical countries. Once dried, its root-like stem is ground into a fine powder often used in cooking. As a major component of curry powder, this aromatic spice gives dishes an earthy taste and vivid yellow colour. This colour comes from the active ingredient, curcumin, which has been shown to have a positive effect on our health.
Relief from joint pain
Turmeric can be taken orally or used as a topical poultice to ease joint and muscle pain while providing powerful antioxidant benefits similar to those found in Vitamin E and C. Studies have demonstrated that turmeric helps reduce inflammation in the elbows, shoulders, and knees, as well as lessen pain related to rheumatoid arthritis.
Can support brain health
Curcumin has been shown to support cognitive function and increase the levels of BDNF, a neurotrophin that supports neurons and encourages growth in the brain. BDNF plays an important role in our long-term memory and may help to lower the risk of diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Protects heart health
Research shows that curcumin, derived from turmeric, is effective at improving the quality of endothelial tissue found in blood vessels, providing a heart-protective benefit from its powerful antioxidant properties. Animal studies have shown that it may help to lower blood cholesterol and minimise the risk of thrombosis.
Curcumin has even been thought to be beneficial to the liver, due to its ability to stimulate bile production and support liver enzyme levels.
Reducing inflammation
Cortisone is a steroid hormone, which occurs naturally in the body and can also be used to treat pain and inflammation. Studies suggest that turmeric, when taken internally, can increase the production of natural cortisone, reducing inflammation and aiding in the healing process. Curcumin, found in turmeric, has been shown to possess similar properties to cortisone in treating acute inflammation.
In addition, it has been found to help those with indigestion, inhibiting intestinal spasms and preventing the formation of gas.
How to supplement turmeric and curcumin…
When it comes to supplementing with Curcumin, it is recommended to take 500-1000mg of dried standardised root extract (containing 95% curcuminoids) daily. Vital Nutrients and 88Herbs have Curcumin extracts which include Piperine, a black pepper extract that can increase the absorption of turmeric by 2000%. For enhanced absorption, it can be beneficial to take Curcumin with fat or in a liposomal form.
